WFX SolomonLogo16 WinnerWhen Valor Christian High School of Highlands Ranch, CO set out to build the Valor Center for Culture and Influence, their goal was to construct a premier, technologically advanced high school performing arts center unlike any other in Colorado. With a belief that media and the arts are a huge communications portal to the school's culture and a focus on room acoustics and interconnectivity, Valor went above and beyond to utilize the most state-of-the-art technology throughout the entire 94,000ft2 building.

Kurt Butler, owner of Butler Engineering & Technology Group, served as the school's representative for all aspects of technology on the project. Having successfully collaborated with Clair Solutions in the past, Butler recommended that Valor hire Clair as their audio, video, lighting and acoustics integrator. Clair Solutions designed and installed AVL systems throughout the venue including a 750-seat performance hall, a recording studio, the main lobby, an event lobby, two dance studios, a medium and a large rehearsal hall, a black box theatre and a TV studio.

For the performance hall, which includes a full-fly space, a mechanized pit lift, and high end audio, video and lighting systems, Clair Solutions' resident acoustical engineer worked diligently to create a variable acoustical system via motorized curtains which can fine-tune the acoustical environment of the space based upon program requirements.

The space also features a one-of-a-kind LCR PA custom-designed by Clair Brothers and powered by Labgruppen D Series 80:4L amplifiers. The system could be described as the polar opposite of one-size-fits-all - a truly tailored sound system. The design process involved careful study of the space's architecture and acoustical design in order to first determine array length and position. Following that, a 3D model of the space with the arrays spatially located was used to create a sculpted continuously variable waveguide. The main PA is augmented by iS118-i flown sub arrays, CS218 subwoofers, kiT12 full range speakers for sound effects, and 12CX-75 coaxial speakers for balcony delays.

The end result was nothing short of remarkable. The system drastically decreased the amount of side wall reflections while producing prominent stereo imaging throughout the room. A big benefit to the customized waveguide was that tuning the system involved very little in the way of gain shading or equalization.

A DiGiCo SD10 FOH console communicates with multiple SD-racks via DiGiCo's Optocore protocol in order to allow for maximum speed, reliability and future expansion.

With plans to expand the video capabilities in the near future, Clair Solutions installed a Ross Video Carbonite switcher, a Barco HDX-W20 center projector, 2 Sony VPLFHZ700L/B side projectors, and a Clear-Com HelixnetNet Intercom System.

ETC's Sensor3 48-Module Dimmer Rack serves as the backbone of the performance hall's theatrical lighting system. The full lighting package includes over 220 fixtures ranging from standard ETC Source Four ellipsoidal fixtures to more versatile LED color-changing fixtures. The system also includes 10 Elation Platinum FLX 3-in-1 luminaires which can be utilized as a beam, spot, or wash fixture.

Each of the venue's many rooms contain audio, video and data tie lines to help support communication and production capture of audio and video related sources. This gives Valor students the ability to interface and connect through the installed AVL systems.
